How to use the tip calculator

  1. 1. Enter the pre-tax restaurant bill.
  2. 2. Choose a common tip or enter a custom percentage.
  3. 3. Add tax, pick whether to tip before or after tax, and choose the number of people.
  4. 4. Optionally round the tip, total, or per-person payment, then copy or share the result.

How to split a restaurant bill

For an equal split, enter the number of diners and the split check calculator divides the final bill automatically. When people ordered different amounts, open Fair Split Mode: individual items stay with each person, shared items are divided equally, and tax and gratuity can be allocated proportionally.

Should you tip before tax or after tax?

A tip calculator before tax applies the percentage to the food and drink subtotal. A tip calculator after tax uses the bill plus tax, producing a slightly larger gratuity. Both approaches are common; choose the basis that matches your preference or local custom. The calculator always shows the subtotal used for tip.

Common tipping percentages in the US

For table service, 15% is often used for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20% or more for very good service. Some restaurants add gratuity automatically for larger groups, so check the receipt before adding another tip. Local practices and service types vary.
