What this tool does
Compute MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 hashes for text. For files, compute SHA-1/256/384/512 via the Web Crypto API. MD5 file hashing is intentionally omitted.
Security Hash Generator computes MD5 and SHA hashes for text, plus SHA file checksums, directly in the browser. It helps verify downloads, compare payloads, and create reproducible fingerprints without uploading sensitive files.
Key features
- Text mode supports MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512
- File mode uses native Web Crypto for SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 checksums
- MD5 file hashing is intentionally omitted to avoid slow, memory-heavy JavaScript hashing on large files
- Copy each digest individually for release notes, support tickets, or checksum manifests
- Clear separation between legacy hashes and stronger SHA-2 algorithms
Common use cases
- Checking a downloaded installer or archive against a publisher's SHA-256 checksum
- Comparing whether two text payloads or config snippets are exactly identical
- Creating file fingerprints for internal documentation or support handoffs
- Debugging API signatures and webhook examples that require a known digest
Things to know
- MD5 and SHA-1 are included for compatibility, not for collision-resistant security
- Hashing proves equality, not trust; only compare against checksums from a trusted source
- Very large files still depend on browser memory and device speed
- This tool does not sign, encrypt, or verify digital signatures
Privacy & local processing
Text and files are hashed locally. File bytes are read by your browser for checksum calculation and are never uploaded to WebToolsLabs. How to use Security Hash Generator
- 01
Pick Text or File mode.
- 02
Paste text or drop a file.
- 03
Copy the hash for the algorithm you need.
Frequently asked questions
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every tool on WebToolsLabs runs entirely inside your browser. Your data never leaves your device.
Why isn't MD5 available for files?
MD5 isn't a Web Crypto algorithm, so we'd have to load the entire file into memory and run a JS implementation — slow and risky for large files. We omit MD5 file hashing on purpose; use SHA-256 instead, which is secure and supported natively.
Is this tool free?
Yes. All tools on WebToolsLabs are 100% free with no signup, no watermarks, and no usage limits.
